Jungle Cruise Ride Walt Disney World Attraction

Marc David later made significant contributions to the design in later versions, including many of the scenes, present today. This post is a quick guide to Jungle Cruise, but we have related content that dives deeper into topics. Our Magic Kingdom Genie+ and Lightning Lane post covers Lightning Lane strategy in deep. The Magic Kingdom Rides and Entertainment Guide gives brief introductions to all the park’s offerings. For putting together your day at the park, we have a One Day Plan for Magic Kingdom. Drums and chanting are heard as the boats enter through the Congo and end up in a place called "Head-Hunter Country".

How many people can the Jungle Cruise boat accommodate?

If you have Genie+, Jungle Cruise is a good use of your first Genie+ pick as it has become one of the most popular rides in the park. Importantly, the ride is also quite long, so heading there at rope drop is less than ideal. You’ll spend the first 30 minutes of your day going through the queue and on the ride, and once off all the waits around the park will be high. The queue takes place in a small boathouse of The Jungle Navigation Co. that is less elaborate than the boathouses found at the other parks. Some people believe that this is a tribute to Charlie’s boat in the movie The African Queen. He also dyed the river brown to prevent the guests from seeing the bottom of the lake.

The boats then depart and head down the river, past Tarzan's Treehouse, where the skipper tells guests to wave goodbye to the guests traversing the treehouse, for they will never see them again. The boats then drift past an Indian elephant and her calf playing in the water, followed by another elephant showering in a waterfall. A large bull Indian elephant emerges from the water squirting a plume of water at the boats with the guests narrowly avoiding the free shower. As with Splash Mountain at Tokyo Disneyland, it seems unlikely that Jungle Cruise will change in Japan. In part this is because Oriental Land Company–and not Disney–owns those parks, but also because that incarnation of the attraction changed a few years ago.

There is a script, but most skippers will bring their own flare to the show– keeping guests laughing and the energy high. As you wait in line to enter the line, it’ll feel like you’re in a colonial outpost. You’ll pass artifacts, photos, and tools from the theme and period of the ride to get you in the right headspace. The ride’s early renditions were more of an experience at first, like visiting a zoo or a botanic garden.

The skipper tells guests that they have entered head hunter country and must quietly sneak by. The boats slowly pass through the main village, where several upright shields rest in the tall grass. A native notices the boats and all the shields now revealed to have head hunters behind them begin firing spears and poison darts at the boats as they narrowly escape into a rocky canyon. In the rocky canyon, the boats stop near two unusual rock formations that look like faces, revealed by the skipper to be the fire god and the water god who constantly feud over their differences. The fire god sets the river ablaze while the water god vomits a water bomb, causing the flames to die and the whole canyon to become a cloud of steam. The boats escape the canyon and pass a baby elephant before returning to the boathouse.

What are the operating hours of the Jungle Cruise ride?

Additionally, the Bengal Barbecue is a photoshopped picture of Rose Sawyer and Charlie Allnut riding in the African veldt past the Zambezi mist and the original lost Safari. Notably, a Society of Explorers and Adventurers show was just announced for Disney+ as the first project for the Magic Kingdom Universe. The article also introduces a number of new characters, including Victoria Marie Falls, Siobhan “Puffin” Murphy, Dr. Leonard Moss, Rosa Soto Dominguez, and S.E.A. Member Dr. Kon Chunosuke. If you’re interested in more info about these characters, check out the My Disney Experience app, which will give you detailed bios. Next, Imagineering has released a 1938 issue of The Daily Gnus about Alberta Falls and the World-Famous Jungle Cruise to tease the upcoming project. There are fun tidbits in there that reflect how Imagineering will be expanding the Jungle Cruise’s backstory.

You’ll encounter giant butterflies, Inspiration Falls, a beach shop called “Boats, Baits, and Bites”, an African rock python, and a Gorilla-raided camp– all before you head down the Nile River. The ride has a long wooden bench on each side of the boat, so guests face each other and sit side by side. Currently, you can use the Disney Genie service to get you through the queues faster with Lightning Lane entrances. However, Genie+ can no longer be pre-purchased– though you can still purchase through the app when you visit the park. There are 15 boats in rotation, each with its memorable name (like Wamba Wanda). The Jungle Cruise story was expanded in 2015 with the opening of the Jungle Cruise-themed restaurant, Jungle Skipper Canteen.

In this new area, you’ll find African Elephants along with many other animals. You’ll pass a zebra watching a lion eat a member of its pack, and a group of lost safari goers hanging from a long pole, avoiding a black Rhino. The queue has four areas that can be opened up, depending on the size of the line. The average wait time for the ride is about an hour, one of the longest at the park. All of the scenes can be experienced from within your boat, making you feel as if you’re an explorer from the thirties. Audio effects have been improved and modernized, the animatronics updated, new scenes added, and the jungle has grown and expanded throughout the years.

If you lean into the pun-centric humor, the experience is a fun one, but the hard product—the animal animatronics etc.—really isn’t top tier. The queue of the Jungle Cruise is heavily themed with period artifacts, tools, gear, photos and more. It is intended to resemble a colonial outpost where an exploration of the jungle rivers may be booked. It is divided into four main sections which may be opened or closed in sequence to accommodate crowd fluctuation.

You’ll wait on the bridge by the entrance until that side of the park opens and then follow the crowds into the queue. Entering the park, you’ll go to the hub and take your first left, heading into Adventureland. You’ll pass by some restaurants, shops, and the Swiss Family Treehouse before arriving at Magic Carpets of Aladdin. It is also located in Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland (California), and Magic Kingdom. Moreover, there’s still no timeline set for the Splash Mountain reimagining, and rumors that the finished project could be years away. Jungle Cruise being announced much later but being finished much earlier suggests to me that perhaps the changes aren’t as substantive as implied.

Up ahead several crocodiles are seen resting on a small beach, while a school of hungry piranha are jumping in the hopes of attacking the guests. The African Veldt comes into view, where antelope, giraffes, zebras, and African elephants stare at the boats. The vessels then drift into a small pool where a pod of hippos try to tip the boat. Several feet ahead a rhino is seen chasing a safari group up a tree while several hyenas look on laughing. The attraction was in the opening day roster of the park, and has remained open and largely unchanged in theme and story since then. In 1994 the river channel was rerouted to make way for the queue buildings and entrance courtyard of the Indiana Jones Adventure.

This appears to be part of Disney’s new focus on inclusion, but the changes also pretty clearly go well beyond that. As we’ve been saying for months now, there are a variety of updates in store for older attractions, many of which are small scale and could be accomplished overnight or with a brief closure. Hong Kong Disneyland could change eventually, although the story and show scenes there are also very different. After you pass Schweitzer Falls (but before you go behind it), you’ll come across this crashed plane…but only the back half! The front half of this plane was formerly found in the Casablanca scene of The Great Movie Ride.

Above is concept art for the replacement scene, where Trader Sam has opportunistically “reimagined” lost & found as a gift shop as a quick and easy way to make some extra cash from tourists. The way the attraction’s scenes are staged makes it more conducive to changes that can be accomplished overnight or in the span of a day or two. It’s likely many of the new scenes won’t be overly elaborate or substantial departures from what’s currently there, but rather one-for-one exchanges of figures and props.
